Production still: Ryder Cooley, Wendy Bell and Philip R. Bonner in Death Valley, 1994. photo: Benton C Bainbridge

Contact was a live visual performance score, originating with the video ensemble 77 Hz and later developed by Lord Knows Compost. A single-channel realization was shot by LKC in San Francisco and Death Valley, California.

In this photograph, Ryder Cooley is holding a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach in preparation for a take. Note Cooley’s right arm and hand are painted silver, like Wendy Bell’s character – Cooley was a good cockroach wrangler and served as the body double for the hand shots. Location: Devil’s Golfcourse. Temperature: 114 Fahrenheit. Humidity: near zero.
